Alteration of the Hallstatt-exhibition hall in the NHM

The prehistoric exhibition halls of the Natural History Museum, the exhibition rooms 11 to 13, are currently being renovated. At the same time, the two oldest residents of the house, the Venus of Willendorf and the "Fanny" of Stratzing will find a new home in a separate small room. Moreover, the gold collection of the Natural History Museum will be presented in a specially built Cabinet of Gold. Finds from Hallstatt will be exhibited in Hall 12.

A highlight of the Cabinet of Gold is the gold find from Arikogel at Lake Hallstatt, which is previously exhibited at the World Heritage Museum in Hallstatt. The hoard consists of 14 pieces of jewelery and has a total weight of 506 grams. It includes two pairs of ornate spiral bracelets and five pairs of simple spiral rings made of gold wire. The treasure was discovered in 2011 on the Arikogel at Lake Hallstatt and dated to the Bronze Age.

In addition to this finds from Lake Hallstatt gold objects will be shown in the gold cabinet from more than 6,000 years. Among these will be the famous neolithic gold discs from Stollhof at the Hohe Wand wich dates in the 4th millennium and many other artifacts, some of which have not been shown to public for over a hundred years.

The 7,000 year-old history of salt production in Hallstatt is represented in hall 12. Main topics are the world famous Iron Age burial ground and the salt extraction and mining from the Neolithic Age, in the large salt mines of the Bronze and Iron Ages to the present day.

The core of the new Hallstatt-hall will be huge modern showcases and dioramas. Nevertheless the atmosphere of the building will be preserved by using as many of the original showcases from the 19.th century as possible. They are one of the dominant elements of the interior design and characterize the traditional ambience of the listed building.

The opening of the new exhibition halls and the prehistoric Hallstatt-hall is scheduled for 29.09.2015.
