Excavations in the Hallstatt mines
Since the 1960s archaeologists have been carrying out research in the Hallstatt mines. This tradition was continued this year by a 20-person team led by Hans Reschreiter. The main focus of this year’s work was to investigate a series of remains, located below the famous wooden staircase, which have now become accessible to researchers for the first time after the staircase was relocated. Another important focus was to determine the original size and shape of the excavation chamber using drilling and tunneling. This is where the staircase was built over 3000 years ago and served for more than 100 years as the main transport route through the mine.
