New at the NHM Vienna: children’s university “Club Vielfalt” with workshops for children and adolescents

03. April 2023
“Club Vielfalt” is the title of the NHM Vienna’s new childrens’ university programme series: between April and November 2023, workshops for children from the age of 8 and adolescents provide insights into the museum’s research activities. The NHM childrens’ university is part of the “2023 Childrens’ and Youth Universities”, a funding programme of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research.
In 39 showrooms, the NHM Vienna displays roughly 100,000 objects from the fields of human, earth and life sciences. 60 scientists are working behind the scenes, enjoying access to about 30 million collection items and a top-of-the-range research infrastructure.
Deck 50 is the museum’s new multifunctional space, serving as research platform, workshop laboratory and meeting zone for relaxed exchanges on natural-sciences topics.

“Club Vielfalt” harnesses all of these options:
Every workshop starts with a researcher working at the NHM who present themselves and their work in a short multi-media presentation focusing on their very personal story, the social relevance of their research and the integration of hands-on items. The presentation is followed by a Q&A session moderated by the museum’s education team.
After this introduction to the world of science, the group sets out on a joint exploration of the collection on display, explaining and highlighting the incredible diversity of nature.
Back on Deck 50, the time has come for hands-on research and crafting: in the lab, the young people try out basic tools of research and engage in creative activities. An interactive quiz concludes the programme and revisits the content of the workshop.

“Club Vielfalt” is designed as a series of workshops, and the individual topics cover almost all areas of the museum: from minerals and raw materials to single-cell organisms, insects and reptiles, mammals and also humans and human culture. Set in consultation with the researchers, the topics also reflect current research projects and themes of social relevance.

Beyond a mere introduction to research, the workshops promote an exchange between society and research through discussions and joint experiments. They also establish links to citizen-science projects which are offered by the museum in order to enable children, young people and adult museum visitors to actively participate in research processes.

The childrens’ university “Club Vielfalt” offers a range of workshops on a variety of topics and research fields between April and November 2023. The dates and topics are published on the NHM’s website, subject to regular updates.
