Environmental education at the museum

Whether it's a tiny sparrow or a large ostrich, an earth toad preserved in alcohol or an anaconda in a lifelike rainforest setting – the exhibition rooms at the NHM Vienna invite visitors to get up close and personal with thousands of animals.

The environmental education team aims to bring the museum’s collection of preserved specimens to life by drawing attention to small details and encouraging visitors to take a closer look at seemingly inconspicuous objects. We want to inspire people and make them aware of nature on their doorstep, in the local park, but also far beyond.

Our learning activities focus on the diverse flora and fauna that is threatened today as never before. The natural balance of the Earth’s ecosystem, which is influenced by countless factors, can all too easily be disturbed. From global issues like climate change and species extinction to small things like the way we design our gardens, humans are part of nature and our actions always impact the planet we call home.

This makes learning about the environment not only interesting and exciting but also important for raising awareness about the significance of looking after Planet Earth.
