“BRAZIL. 200 years of relations” - The new exhibition at the NHM Vienna is open!

The new special exhibition “BRAZIL. 200 years of Relations” was inaugurated on 7 June 2022. It is now on display in the four
cabinets and two special exhibition halls at the Natural History Museum Vienna until 23 April 2023 (extended until 3 September,
2023). The exhibition showcases the fascinating diversity of Brazil from the perspective of centuries of shared history between
Brazil and Austria with their global interactions.
NHM Vienna Director General Dr Katrin Vohland
and Economic Director Mag Markus Roboch welcomed the guests at the opening in the midst of Brazilian
sounds by the band Mandando Brasa and magnificent floral decorations provided by the Austrian Federal Gardens.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Brazil, Nelson Antonio Tabajara de Oliveira, gave a welcome address, as
did Dr. Marcus Bergmann (Deputy Head of the DG Cultural Affairs, Austrian Federal Ministry for European and
International Affairs). The exhibition was opened by Jürgen Meindl (Head of DG Arts and Culture, Federal
Ministry of Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport). Scientific contributions by the curatorial team completed the opening:
Director General Dr. Katrin Vohland, the head of the Botanical Department, Dr. Christian Bräuchler,
the curator of the Anthropological Department, Prof. Dr. Sabine Eggers, and the head of the Archive
for the History of Science, DDr. Martin Krenn, shared insights on the various themes of the show.
“It gives me great pleasure to witness the opening of this exhibition, which is very close to my heart, both in personal and in scientific terms. It highlights the long-standing relations between Brazil and Austria, the historical and current ties, but also the diverse natural realms of Brazil and the scientific approaches to the conservation and protection of biodiversity. I am delighted that the opening was such a successful and festive event,” notes NHM Vienna Director General Dr Katrin Vohland.
The cooperation partners – the Austrian Federal Gardens and the Augarten Porcelain Museum – joined in the celebrations. The Augarten Porcelain Museum – represented by its Scientific Director Dr. Claudia Lehner-Jobst – provided a valuable loan for the exhibition and the Austrian Federal Gardens, represented at the opening by Ing. Daniel Rohrauer, Head of the Botanical Collections, contributed the evening's lush floral decoration with rare flowers and Brazilian greenery. The two institutions are also represented in the supporting programme to the BRAZIL exhibition. The Austrian Federal Gardens offer guided tours of their show “Natural Wonders of a New World: Brazil at Schönbrunn”, and the Augarten Porcelain Museum offers guided tours of “LEOPOLDINA. Fearlessly to Rio”.
Prof. Dr. Bernd Lötsch, former General Director of the NHM Vienna, and Board of Trustees members Monika Gabriel, MMag. Bernhard Mazegger, DI Harald Pflanzl, a.o. Univ.-Prof. Mag Dr. Katrin Schäfer as well as Dr. Andreas Hantschk joined to celebrate the start of the exhibition. Guests from politics and society were also seen to enjoy the evening at the museum, including Martin Pammer, Ambassador at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, Prof. Dr. Walter Hödl, architect Rudolf Lamprecht as well as Dr. Eva Walderdorff and Andrea Fürnweger from the Cercle Diplomatique.
The exhibition “BRAZIL. 200 years of relations” runs until 23 April 2023. It is flanked by an extensive supporting programme with symposia, workshops, guided tours and an interactive programme on Deck 50. A blog with informative texts and videos on the themes of the exhibition completes the programme.
