"Zurück in die Urzeit" – New augmented reality show at NHM Vienna

29. January 2026
Swim with pristine fish through the underwater world of the Earth's ancient age and accompany the first animals on land, glide through the air with flying aurorae and walk with the primal bird Archaeopteryx through the forests of the Jurassic period. All this is now possible with the new augmented reality show "Back to primeval times" on Deck 50.

From February 2026, the NHM Vienna invites you on a spectacular journey through 380 million years of earth's history. With the new augmented reality show "Back to primeval times" on Deck 50, the interactive space for science communication, the geological past of the region between Vienna and Brno can be experienced impressively.

The show was developed together with 7reasons Medien GmbH as part of the EU Interreg project GeoTT ATCZ00013, which makes the dramatic geological history of the Austrian-Moravian border area between Vienna and Brno tangible across borders in the form of a time travel - analogous to 17 infotels at fossil sites and a prehistoric playground in the fossil world of Stetten, digitally with a time travel app and the new show at the NHM Vienna.

The show tells the story of life and the origin of the Lower Austrian-Southern Moravian landscape with the fossils from the region. It brings to life numerous local fossils from five geological ages and immerses visitors in these five different worlds – from the first fish in the Devonian to the Stone Age camp with humans on the mammoth hunt. At each stop of the journey through time, visitors can experience the living creatures under water as well as observe life on land and interactively intervene in the scenes.

The new show premieres as part of wienxtra's holiday game in the 2026 semester break week, and then runs every Saturday at 4.30 p.m. School classes can book their own performances on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Telephone: +43 1 52177-335 (Mon 2 p.m.-5 p.m.; Wed-Fri 9 a.m.-12 p.m.); E-mail: anmeldung@nhm.at

Interested journalists are invited to book tickets at +43 1 52177-335.
