22. Meeting of Austrian Botanists at the Natural History Museum Vienna
22. September 2026
From 24 to 27 September, the NHM Vienna will become the centre of domestic plant science research. Together with the University of Vienna, it organizes the Austrian Botany Conference, which takes place every two years. More than 170 experts from the fields of botany, ecology and nature conservation come together in Vienna to discuss current research results and their practical application in nature conservation.

The four-day conference program covers the broad spectrum of current research conducted at domestic universities, museums and other institutions. In 48 scientific lectures and over 30 poster presentations, the participants dedicate themselves to a wide range of topics. The research area is by no means limited to Austria, but extends geographically across the Mediterranean to the tropics.

Focus on research diversity and relevance
The programme is complemented by four interdisciplinary study visits. They present special species and their habitats in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, lead to selected research sites and present practical nature conservation projects – such as the renaturation of the former Breitenlee relocation station in the 22nd century. Vienna Municipality – in which the NHM Vienna is involved as a project partner. The social relevance of the topics discussed is undisputed.Practical nature conservation in times of biodiversity crisis
Especially in times of the noticeable climate and biodiversity crisis, scientific research into the plant world and the recording of its changes is more urgent than ever in order to provide fact-based foundations for nature conservation and renaturation. The conference sheds light on fundamental research on the diversity of the plant world and shows concrete examples of how these findings can be applied in Austria and on an international level in order to actively counteract the extinction of species.NHM Vienna as a research location
By hosting the conference, the NHM Vienna once again underlines its role and responsibility as an important, internationally networked research location and space for scientific discourse. Current and diverse research at the NHM Vienna is inextricably linked to the preservation, maintenance, expansion and presentation of the world-famous scientific collections.Related links
