ORF-Long Night of Museums

The ORF-Long Night of Museums at NHM Vienna and in the Pathological-anatomical Collection in the Narrenturm.

The Natural History Museum Vienna (NHM) is a cultural and historical gem and at the same time a significant natural science institution, with collections that are more than 270 years old. Today around 30 million objects are kept there. The highlights include the Venus of Willendorf, Steller's sea cow and a special hall for science communication ('Deck 50').

The rich collections of the Natural History Museum Vienna (NHM) provide information about the past, present, and future of our planet. Artefacts bearing witness to the Earth’s history, such as minerals and fossils, meteorites from space, human skeletons, and specimens from the realm of animals and plants, are not only collected and exhibited, but are also the subject of continuous research using the latest scientific methods.

An exciting natural history expedition through the museum! Discover habitats not only from the perspective of zoology and botany, but also within the context of prehistory, anthropology, geology, and mineralogy. Find out more from the researchers at the NHM Vienna at information points in the permanent exhibition.

PATHOLOGICAL-ANATOMICAL COLLECTION AT THE "NARRENTURM"

The Narrenturm with its pathological-anatomical collection (Spitalgasse 2, 1090 Vienna) also participates in the Long Night: The permanent exhibition shows various topics of pathology as well as its historical development in Vienna. The history of the building, the so-called "Narrenturm", is equally discussed, including its historically accurate restoration.

Injuries caused by electricity are the focus of this electrifying guided tour. Electropathology, founded by Stefan Jellinek (1871–1968), was a distinct field of medical research at the dawn of electrification; many of the specimens on display come from his collection. The exhibition features injuries caused by lightning strikes to both humans and animals, as well as workplace accidents involving high-voltage power. Duration: approx. 45 mins.
