Bird life
The new habitats of birds
from 29. September 2026
Permanent exhibition from 29 September 2026, on the 2nd floor
In accordance with the master plan of the
NHM Vienna, the bird galleries are undergoing extensive renovation and redesign. The aim is to present the diversity of bird
life in a clear and accessible way, based on the latest scientific findings. Work on the historic Halls 29 and 30 is currently
in its final stages.
Hall 29 is dedicated to a basic introduction to the world of birds. The focus is
on what actually characterizes birds – their common characteristics and evolution, but also their importance in ecosystems.
A special focus is laid on the most important habitats in Central Europe, such as cities, parks, and riparian forests. These
are presented in connection with typical bird species that are commonly found in Austria. Both, the characteristics of the
individual habitats as well as their ecological functions are addressed.
Room 30 plays a special role
on the second floor. Its central location and access from three sides make it ideal for opening up views beyond Central Europe.
This room presents the world's most important habitats – vividly staged, for example in dioramas of the Amazon lowland rainforest
or globally significant mountain cloud forests. In addition to the colorful birds as the main eye-catcher and the impressive
diversity of bird species worldwide, global challenges are also addressed here, including desertification, habitat loss, and
the impact of human intervention on biodiversity. The hall thus combines aesthetic presentation with depth of content and
invites visitors to engage with current environmental issues.
