Prehistoric shark poses puzzles in shark research

A newly examined prehistoric shark from the age of dinosaurs provides surprising insights into the early evolution of modern sharks. It cannot be confidently assigned to any shark order that exists today and thus calls into question previous assumptions about the evolution of modern sharks.

New exhibition at the Natural History Museum Vienna: "Cockaigne. Schlaraffenland der Zukunft?"

With the special exhibition "Cockaigne. Schlaraffenland der Zukunft?", the Natural History Museum Vienna is dedicated to food production. The exhibition will be on view from 10 February to 19 July 2026 in Room 21 on Level 2.

New Moa showcase in the Natural History Museum Vienna

From now on, a new Moa showcase in a modern design and with a new arrangement of three Moa skeletons will be on display at NHM Vienna. It is located on level 1, in the so-called "Moa corridor".

"Zurück in die Urzeit" – New augmented reality show at NHM Vienna

Swim with pristine fish through the underwater world of the Earth's ancient age and accompany the first animals on land, glide through the air with flying aurorae and walk with the primal bird Archaeopteryx through the forests of the Jurassic period. All this is now possible with the new augmented reality show "Back to primeval times" on Deck 50.

Type genomics: DNA treasure in the collection

In a joint appeal, an international research team, including Priv.-Doz. Dr. Anja Palandačić and Dr. Nikolaus Szucsich from the NHM Vienna, for the targeted and comprehensive genome sequencing of type specimens – the reference specimens of individual species that are kept in natural history collections. How DNA from type specimens can revolutionize biodiversity research.
