Experience science for free: Free admission to the wednesday evening lectures at the Natural History Museum Vienna

04. September 2025
Starting immediately and until the end of 2025, the Natural History Museum Vienna (NHM Wien) will start with a special action: The popular wednesday evening lectures are free of charge for all visitors. This new offer enables a low-threshold participation in lectures on scientific and cultural-historical topics.
The lectures at the NHM Vienna shed light on exciting topics from the fields of natural science, research and cultural history. Curated by Dr. Andreas Hantschk (Department of Science Communication) and Mag. Andrea Zaremba (Friends of the NHM Vienna Association), the lectures complement the museum’s exhibition program and current research activities. In the coming months, the programme will include “Evolution of Human Birth”, “Human and Nature in the Ice Age” and “Threatened Giants – Evolution, Biology and Protection of Rhinos”. In the course of their lectures, researchers provide in-depth insights into their daily work and thus make the world of science tangible for the general public.

Attendance at the Wednesday evening lectures is possible with a free ticket available via the NHM Vienna webshop. On the day of the lecture, the ticket grants free admission to the Natural History Museum Vienna from 6:00 PM onwards and includes access to the lecture. As space is limited to 150 participants, early booking is strongly recommended.

“Free scientific lectures at the NHM Vienna are of central importance because they provide access to knowledge for all people, regardless of financial opportunities. They promote dialogue between science and society, arouse curiosity about nature and research and thus contribute to the formation of a broad public. Especially in times of global challenges such as climate change and species extinction, it is essential to understand the scientific process that makes the influence of humans on nature demonstrable. The NHM Vienna is not only the venue for the exhibition, but also a lively discussion forum where research can be experienced directly and people are strengthened in their responsibility for nature and the environment”,says Dr Katrin Vohland, Director General and Scientific Director of the NHM Vienna.

The Wednesday evening lectures have been a well-established format in the NHM Vienna's educational programme for many decades and are very popular. The current initiative is made possible by a supporter who wishes to remain anonymous and will run through the end of 2025. Should the program prove successful, an extension is being considered.
