Press trip to the NHM site Petronell & Boat trip in the Danube floodplains under the motto "Only what you know can be protected!"

25. August 2025
It is of particular concern to the Natural History Museum Vienna to make the central importance of science-based environmental education visible. With the National Park Institute Petronell, the NHM Vienna operates a location in one of the most beautiful areas of the Danube floodplains.
At the Petronell National Park Institute, a wide range of target groups – school classes as well as innovative decision-makers of today – can gain direct experience of animals and plants in the wild and observe them in their habitat. At the same time, they learn about the importance of biological collections and taxonomic research for species and nature conservation. The offers of the Department of Science Communication of the NHM Vienna are not only aimed at promoting an understanding of ecological contexts, the mandatory prerequisite for sustainable action and the sense of responsibility of each individual towards nature. The staff of the NHM Vienna have decades of expertise in communicating scientific findings in an understandable way, but also in stimulating dialogue on environmental issues and in raising people's awareness of environmental protection and the beauty of nature. In addition, the participation of the public in local, national and international environmental initiatives as well as policy development is actively promoted through a wide variety of projects and activities.

Spend a day in the Danube floodplains with scientists and communicators of the house and get to know our different formats on the subject of environmental education directly on site.
