Making the hidden world heritage visible

For this year's UNESCO World Heritage Day, the NHM Vienna invites you to two events. On 17 April, the "hidden" UNESCO World Heritage Site will be made visible in Hall 11. On 18 April, lectures, a special exhibition opening and the awarding of the "Friedrich Simony Prize" will be held at the Hallstatt site. The thematic arc is stretched from the Paleolithic to the Hallstatt period.

On Friday 17 April, the "hidden" world heritage will be made visible in the Natural History Museum Vienna. Academic staff of the Prehistoric Department and the Pfahlbauten Board of Trustees span the arc from the Paleolithic to the Hallstatt period. In Hall 11 of the NHM Vienna, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Prehistoric pile buildings around the Alps and the sites of Willendorf from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Wachau are presented. The Hallstatt House of Culture and Congress will host the public information event "Early Bread and First Salt – Hallstatt in the Neolithic Age of Europe" on Saturday 18 April. The opening speeches were given by Alexander Scheutz, Mayor of Hallstatt, and Karina Grömer, Director of the Prehistoric Department of the NHM Vienna. This was followed by lectures on the latest research findings, the opening of the special exhibition "Riezinger", guided tours of the newly designed Museum Hallstatt and the awarding of the ‘Friedrich Simony Prize’ for extraordinary achievements around the UNESCO World Heritage Site Salzkammergut. Citizens have the opportunity to discuss with experts the latest archaeological finds and historical findings in the region.

Austrian World Heritage Day takes place annually on 18 April. It is intended to help draw attention to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Austria and to raise awareness that constant efforts are needed to protect the unique cultural and natural treasures from decay or destruction.

Parking facilities: Entry into Hallstatt is not possible and not allowed. The following parking spaces are available outside the village: https://www.hallstatt.net/parken-in-hallstatt/ You need about 10 minutes walk to the congress location. If these parking spaces are occupied, there is also the possibility to park at Steeg-Gosau station in Bad Goisern (neighborhood) and from there to travel by train and boat to Hallstatt. Also in Obertraun (neighborhood) there are parking spaces and the possibility to travel by boat to Hallstatt.
