Press conference on the anniversary exhibition "Good Collecting – Bad Collecting. 150 years of the Natural History Museum Vienna"
The 150th anniversary is an occasion for the Natural History Museum
Vienna to take a critical look back at its own history. The desire to collect and the joy of discovering and exploring, which
still drives scientists to this day, contrast with the dark sides of collecting and the collections. This resulted in an exhibition
that breaks with the usual viewing habits.

Natural History Museum of Vienna: Biodiversity meets cultural diversity
Around
the Eurovision Song Contest, the NHM Vienna connects Vienna with "Voices of Nature. Song Contest of the animals" biodiversity
and musical diversity in an unusual way: 35 animals each represent one participating country, an audio guide with animal voices
accompanied by the Biological Showrooms on level 2 – complemented by a vote for the favourite animal and interactive social
media moments.

The gemstone bouquet in new splendour: Sparkling splendor now also available as a 3D model
150 years after
the foundation of the NHM Vienna, one of the noblest and most valuable exhibits receives a temporary pop-up showcase in Hall
IV, which explains the exciting object history. After the conversion of the vault showcase, the gemstone bouquet is better
protected by the active monitoring of the humidity and shines in a new light design.

Making the hidden world heritage visible
For this year's UNESCO World Heritage Day, the NHM Vienna invites you
to two events. On 17 April, the "hidden" UNESCO World Heritage Site will be made visible in Hall 11. On 18 April, lectures,
a special exhibition opening and the awarding of the "Friedrich Simony Prize" will be held at the Hallstatt site. The thematic
arc is stretched from the Paleolithic to the Hallstatt period.

New Zealand museum pioneer opens Kulturpool Stakeholder Forum 2026
Under the
title "Language, Power and Data", the Networking Meeting for Digital Cultural Heritage will stop in Klagenfurt for the first
time. The renowned museologist Sarah Kenderdine (EPFL) will open the forum on 5 May with a keynote speech at the kärnten.museum.

Finally barrier-free: The new visitor lift in the first courtyard has been completed!
The Natural History Museum Vienna celebrates the long-awaited opening of a new lift on Friday, April 10, 2026, at
10 a.m. The new visitor lift accommodates 42 people and provides barrier-free access to all levels of the museum,
from the basement to deck 50.

The NHM Vienna invites you to the Long Night of Research 2026
As one of the largest non-university research institutions in Austria, the Natural History
Museum Vienna is once again opening its doors on the Long Night of Research. From 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., interested parties
can experience research up close on Friday, April 24, 2026, with free admission. A highlight of the evening is the presentation

Baroque type catalogue by Ignaz von Born now available digitally
Ignaz von Born
was the first scientist to record the imperial collections of natural history and bring them up to date with the latest research
at the time. He published a comprehensive catalogue in which all mollusc species in the collection were named uniformly and
scientifically correctly. The species he described more than 250 years ago have now been professionally revised and made digitally
accessible.

Prehistoric shark poses puzzles in shark research
A newly examined prehistoric shark from
the age of dinosaurs provides surprising insights into the early evolution of modern sharks. It cannot be confidently assigned
to any shark order that exists today and thus calls into question previous assumptions about the evolution of modern sharks.

Swim with pristine
fish through the underwater world of the Earth's ancient age and accompany the first animals on land, glide through the air
with flying aurorae and walk with the primal bird Archaeopteryx through the forests of the Jurassic period. All this is now
possible with the new augmented reality show "Back to primeval times" on Deck 50.

Type genomics: DNA treasure in the collection
