Obituary for Robert Seemann
Dr. Robert Seemann unexpectedly passed away in Vienna on December 20, 2010, at the age of 65. With him the Natural History
Museum in Vienna (NHMW) lost a renowned curator and successful department head.
Robert Seemann was born on December 7, 1945, in Vienna, Austria and studied petrology at the University of Vienna, where
he received his PhD in 1974. In 1971, he entered the NHMW and was appointed as curator of the rock collection at the Department
of Mineralogy and Petrography in 1978. From 2004 until his death in 2010 he was head of the Department of Mineralogy and Petrography.
Robert Seemann has been well known for his numerous interdisciplinary projects which were mainly devoted to speleology
and/or mineralogy. Another important activity by him was the organization of exhibitions which often were linked with outreach
activities of the NHMW. However, Robert Seemann will be remembered by his friends and colleagues not only as a dedicated organizer
of projects and exhibitions, but also as a warm and pleasant person.
